The construction is the difference
While solid hardwood is one plank thickness throughout, engineered hardwood is different. It is layered. On the top is your species of choice, be it ash, cherry, oak, or walnut. Don't worry; this layer has the undertones, whorls, and grain that you love. Underneath this layer are three genuine layers of wood that are pressed together with resin. They are placed in a crosswise position to the top layer. This makes the floor more stable. It also enables the floor to handle humidity better.
Engineered wood flooring has more installation possibilities than higher-than-normal moisture areas, such as basements. Solid wood cannot go into basements because it will warp due to the humidity and moisture content, but—engineered wood can. Solid hardwood can be affected by moisture and has to have an acclimation period. Engineered doesn't. Engineered hardwood doesn't need an acclimation period because it won't warp in humid or moisture-rich areas.
Thicker is better
Be it solid or engineered, the plank's thickness determines how many times it can be sanded and refinished. The ideal thickness for solid is ¾ inch. This means it can be sanded up to six times. Engineered ranges from 5/8 inch to ½ inch. Usually, an engineered floor can be sanded five times.
Installation between the solid and engineered will be different. Solid is a tongue-in-groove process with a nail down. Subfloor restoration and repair may be needed, along with a moisture reading. Engineered wood can be a floating floor that is simple to put into place. The pieces click together easily and rest over a subfloor.
